2 Sided Speaker Stands

I know that sounds strange, but i was asked to build some two sided speaker stands… The advantage being, if you’re short of space, your controller keyboard (if that’s what you’re using it for) can sit in between. The client actually had a DJ setup that was very tight for space.

Of course, the centre of gravity had to be taken into account, by making the 2 legs splay out slightly. I added cutouts to the legs to make them less “clunky”, and I think they turned out well.

Simple Angled Speaker Stand - Any size

Low Profile, Speaker Stands (floor)

Here are some visualisations of a scaled up version of my angled stand for larger (vintage?) hifi speakers. I can make these speaker stands any size and can make the angle whatever is required (these are tilted back 7 degrees). Made using high quality birch plywood and constructed to last!

I can finish these in natural water based satin varnish, painted black or white.

Hand Made Speaker Stands

Over the years, I’ve made a range of different styles of speaker stand. Each one handmade and custom designed to match the client’s requirements. So far, they have fallen into a few common themes, so here’s a quick round up, and also potentially a few ideas for new designs.

Simple “Riser” style speaker stands

These are typically to raise your speakers/monitors off your workdesk or workstation. These can be made any size in this form, but above a certain size I’ll sometimes add cross pieces below the top for added strength. I normally include foam tape to the bottom of the legs, for some basic sound isolation.

These are 18mm birch plywood and glued + screwed. All holes plugged (so you only see the wooden plug, not the screws) – These riser style speaker stands are very sturdy (you can stand on them) – they will last a lifetime. Supplied fully assembled.

If you’re interested in a simple speaker stand like this, just contact me with the width, depth and height you would like, and I’ll drop you back a sketch and confirm a price. mike@homestudiorack.co.uk

Custom Angled Speaker Stands

In order to accomodate optimised listening, sometimes it’s necessary to have your speakers at an angle.

As these are custom built, I can make the angle anything required (just let me know) There’s loads of resources online about optimising your speaker positions.

Typically I include a lip on the back edge to ensure your speakers, don’t fall off the back! and foam tape to reduce the chance of vibration.

Custom “Cabinet Style” Speaker Stands

These stands are more “box” like and again can be any size. Often the shelf space is used for storing vinyl. I can add castors or spikes on these if required. I’ve even done these sitting on a separate wheeled “trolly” for make it easier to move them about, but not part of the main stand.

Bespoke Speaker Stands

Sometimes I have a request for a completely bespoke stand for a specific pair of speakers or individual speaker.

I can essentially design something to suit your requirements, and work through the design with you until we have something that matches exactly what you’re after. It might take a few iterations, but this is all part of the process, and it’s best to do this at the design stage, than half way through production.

Here are a few examples of bespoke “specials”

Should I put my bookshelf speakers on an angled stand?

Using angled stands for your bookshelf speakers can be a great idea—depending on your setup and listening preferences. Here’s a few thoughts:

Purpose of Angled Speaker Stands

The primary goal of angled stands is to align the speaker drivers (especially the tweeters) with your ears when you’re in your main listening position. This is known as achieving the “listening axis” alignment, which can significantly improve:

  • Clarity of highs
  • Imaging
  • Overall frequency balance

When You Should Use Angled Stands

Use angled stands if:

  • Your speakers are placed above or below ear level (e.g., on a low/high shelf or desk).
  • You sit relatively close to them (near-field listening).
  • The tweeters are not aimed at your ears without tilting.
  • You want to tighten the stereo image and maximize detail in the upper frequencies.

When Angled Stands May NOT Be Necessary

Avoid or reconsider if:

  • Your speakers are already at ear level, either on regular stands or a high shelf.
  • Your speakers are rear-ported, and the tilt back causes port noise to reflect poorly off a wall.
  • You’re using them in a larger room setup with varied listening positions.

Other Tips

  • Use stands with foam isolation or rubber feet to reduce vibration and resonance.
  • Consider the manufacturer’s recommended orientation—some speakers are designed to be flat or aimed in a specific direction.
  • Experiment! Even a few degrees of tilt can change the sound a lot.

Final Advice

If your current setup places the tweeters significantly below your ear level, then angled stands can be a simple and effective upgrade. If the alignment is already good, the change may be minimal or unnecessary.
